Dermatological advice

  • What is a sensitive skin?
  • Dry, normal or oily, the sensitive skin is a skin which is physiologically or mechanically weakened and thus easily irritable. The threshold of reaction is lowered when the skin is confronted with an external stimulus.

  • How do surgras agents work?

  • Is it absolutely necessary to use a soap to wash oneself, or is water sufficient?
  • The dirt which settle on the skin are, from a chemical point of view, closer to oil than to water. Then, using only water is not enough. Only toiletries are capable of "removing" the dirt from the skin and of facilitating their elimination with the rinsing water.
  • What is the difference between a syndet and a hypoallergenic cleansing bar?
  • The name "hypoallergenic cleansing bar" is a generic term used to indicate a solid cleansing shape, developed for sensitive skin (dry, reactive, irritated…).
Under this name, we find two more precise typologies of solid cleansing forms:
    - Soaps, solid forms of natural origin, called "dermatological soaps "
    - Syndets (or synthetic detergent), solid forms of synthetic origin, mostly called "hypoallergenic cleansing bars". They are "soap-free" bars, dedicated to soap intolerant skin
  • Do soaps or shower gels generate risks for the skin?
  • The risks for the skin can be of two types:
    - Irritations
These reactions can occur when the products used are not of good quality. They may contain aggressive surfactants which alter the hydrolipidic film. To prevent this type of irritations it is important to use high-quality toiletries and preferably "surgras". On the other hand, one to two showers a day are sufficient.
    - Allergies
Everything that is applied on the skin can cause an allergic reaction. It is thus important to avoid including any "allergenic" ingredient during the development of a new product and to check that clinical tests were realized to make sure that the product is hypoallergenic.
  • What are the components which are aggressive towards the skin?
  • The main components irritating the skin are:
    - Surfactants or cleaning agents. Due to their dual polarity they can alter the hydrolipidic film. Unprotected, the skin becomes more sensitive to external aggressions. The "surgras" agents contained in some toiletries restore the altered hydrolipidic film.
    - Fragrances, colouring agents and some excipients can also create reactions of either irritations or allergies. Regarding fragrances, we formulate our products by using specific perfumes that allow limiting the risks of intolerance.
  • Is a dry skin predisposed to become sensitive?
  • Yes, it is, since sensitive skin’ hydrolipidic film is often of “poor” quality. This facilitates the leak of water towards the outside and the penetration of foreign substances.
  • What difference is there between a sensitive skin and an allergic skin?
  • A sensitive skin is a skin which is more likely to be irritated by any stimulus. An allergic skin will systematically react to a specific substance, known as allergenic.
  • Should I use a specific product to wash my face?
  • The face is the part of the body the most exposed to the outside climatic conditions. It is necessary to use a product with a specific cleansing base that is not aggressive towards the skin. Using as well a surgras soap is important. It will help to restore the hydrolipidic film after the shower, in order to reduce the skin’s reactivity.
  • What is a skin with imperfections?
  • A skin with imperfections presents irregularities on the surface: pimples, blackheads, micro cysts, often resulting from sebum hyperproduction.
